We sent our teachers on a teachers retreat to Matenwa. I cannot say enough good things about Matenwa. They are the epicenter for revolutionary education in Haiti.
They graciously brought our teachers under their wings and shared with us their philosophy and technology. Matenwa is the exemplar representation of what education should be in Haiti. They teach non-violent mother tongue education, agricultural development and social justice. They hold true that the problems and strengths of their own communities are solvable from within the community rather than carrying in solutions from the outside. They walked our teachers through a guided experiential process of Reflection Circles and Open Space Technology. People begin to recognize that knowledge, confidence, and self determination can be found in their own experiences and histories. Wisdom is present in their own sense of reflection, imagination and inquiry. They believe i nan active participatory education to build tools and skills needed for building effective institutional and cultural practices. They say that education is a conversation in which everyone is welcome to share no matter your age, gender, or economic status. Thank you Matenwa for your gracious care for us.
